Workshop 1

Tuesday, March 2

As you walk inAl entrar

  1. Recorder from the bin, bag closed.
  2. Chromebook stays closed.La Chromebook, cerrada.
  3. Review Sheet face up.La hoja de revisión boca arriba.
Six of the eight lines are this map. The other two are level and place.
2
Do Now
Which Line, And When?
¿Qué línea, y cuándo?

You audited this track on paper last week. Today say it the way you will say it to a person: at what time, and which line.

At ______ line ____ fails, because ______.En ______ la línea ____ falla, porque ______.
The track that came in, twice (93 seconds)La pista que llegó, dos veces (93 segundos)
The same one you audited last Wednesday.

The time is the part most people skip. It is the part that makes it usable.

3
Today
I Can
Yo puedo

I canYo puedo

I can critique a track by naming the time, the line it fails and the evidence, using the criteria we already use.

I know I have got it whenSé que lo logré cuando

  • Every piece of feedback I gave names a time and a line, not just a feeling.
  • I gave two producers three items each, and at least one of them was a line that passes.
  • I wrote down what I was given without arguing, and marked the one I will act on tomorrow.

A time, a line, and why. Three parts, every time.

Warm-Up
The Row, Then The Sheet
La escala, luego la hoja
  1. The row once: D E F# G A B C D and back.La escala una vez: D E F# G A B C D y de regreso.
  2. Recorders back in the bin. All of them.Las flautas al cubo. Todas.
  3. Read the eight lines aloud, as a room.
  4. Clip your brief, mix and space sheets behind the new one.
The row, 76 BPMLa escala, 76 pulsos por minuto
Made for this class.

Nothing on this sheet is new. It is what you have been marked against since last Wednesday.

5
I Do
Time, Line, Why
Hora, línea, motivo

UselessInservible

"The drop is weak.""La pausa está floja."

Nothing to go and do.No hay nada que hacer con eso.

True, not usableCierto, pero no sirve

"Line 5 fails.""La línea 5 falla."

Better. But where?Mejor. ¿Pero dónde?

UsableSirve

"At 0:17 line 5 fails - everything stops and nothing holds.""En 0:17 la línea 5 falla: todo se detiene y nada sigue sonando."

Now the producer can go and fix it.Ahora el productor puede ir y arreglarlo.

New rule today: the producer MAY answer - but with the track, not with an explanation. You can argue about a criterion. You cannot argue about somebody's taste, which is why we do not trade in it.

6
We Do
One Track, Whole Room
Una pista, todo el salón
  1. A volunteer plays their track twice.Alguien toca su pista dos veces.
  2. Anybody may give an item: time, line, why.Cualquiera da un comentario: hora, línea, motivo.
  3. The producer may play it again to answer. No explaining.
  4. The producer writes every item down and marks the most useful one.
At ______ line ____ passes / fails, because ______.

If your item has the word good or bad in it, hold it and find the line instead.

7
You Do
Three Items Each, Two Producers
Tres comentarios, dos productores
  1. Threes. Each track played twice.En tríos. Cada pista se toca dos veces.
  2. Write three items for each of the other two.
  3. At least one item must be a line that PASSES, with its time.
  4. Hand the sheet over. Write what you are given. Reply to none of it.Entrega la hoja. Anota lo que te den. No respondas a nada.
  5. Last two minutes: mark the ONE you will act on tomorrow.Últimos dos minutos: marca el que vas a usar mañana.

Checkpoint at 34:00Revisión a las 34:00

  • Six items given, all with times and linesSeis comentarios dados, con hora y línea
  • Six received and written downSeis recibidos y anotados
  • One marked to act on tomorrowUno marcado para mañana

The hard one is giving a real item to a track you liked.

8
Show Me
The One I Am Acting On
El que voy a usar

Four scholars: read one item you were given, exactly as they wrote it, then say what you will change.

They wrote: at ______ line ____ ______. Tomorrow I am changing ______.

One of you names today's learning for the room.

Then pack downLuego, a guardar

  1. Review Sheet clipped to your brief, mix and space sheets.
  2. Chromebook docked and plugged in. I count them.Chromebook en el carro y enchufado. Los cuento.
  3. Recorder bagged, bag in the bin.
9
Tomorrow
Next: Revision 1
Mañana: revisión 1

Tomorrow you act on one item - and then prove the change did what you meant it to.Mañana actúan sobre un comentario, y luego prueban que el cambio hizo lo que querían.

Bring the sheet. The item you marked is the one you owe an answer to.Traigan la hoja.
