Accessibility

What I have built in, how I tested it, and what is not done yet.

Conformance status

I build this site to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which is the standard NYC Public Schools requires of its school websites.

It is partially conformant. Most of the standard is met and measured, and the things that are not yet met are listed under known limitations below rather than left for you to run into.

Statement prepared 7 September 2026, from measurements taken against the live site on that date.

What is built in

Zoom

Press + / - or use the buttons to zoom a lesson from 60% to 180%. 0 resets it.

Keyboard

← → move between parts of a lesson, Space starts the timer, F is fullscreen, Esc closes.

Swipe

On a phone or tablet, swipe left or right to move through a lesson. The buttons and arrow keys do the same thing, so a gesture is never the only way through.

Pictures

Every illustration on a lesson page opens full screen when you click or tap it, zooms to five times with + and -, pinch or double-click, and closes with Esc, the close button or a tap outside it.

Text size

Nothing you read is under 16px, which is the 12 point minimum the DOE sets. A script checks it on every build.

Contrast

Every piece of text is measured against what is actually behind it and meets the 4.5:1 ratio.

Targets

Every button and link is at least 24 by 24 pixels, and 44px for the ones you use on a phone.

Screen readers

Every page has a skip link, a labeled main region and breadcrumbs. Every image has a description.

Spanish

The ES button turns on Spanish support wherever I have written it, and remembers your choice.

How I tested it

I load the pages in a real browser at phone size (390 by 844) and at SmartBoard size (1366 by 768), measure every piece of text for its computed size and its contrast against what is actually behind it, and press every control to confirm it does something. That runs on every build, so a change that breaks one of these cannot ship quietly.

Automated measurement is not the same as testing with somebody who uses a screen reader every day, and I have not done that. It is in the limitations below.

Known limitations

Stated plainly, because a statement that hides its gaps is not worth reading:

  • The NYC Public Schools logo is missing from the footer. The guidelines require it and I have not added the artwork yet.
  • Only Spanish is provided of the twelve languages named in Chancellor's Regulation A-663. Every page is written so your browser can translate it into any language, and free human translation is your right – see the note at the bottom of any page.
  • No testing with assistive technology users. My measurements are automated. They catch sizes, contrast, structure and dead controls; they do not tell me how this site feels to somebody using a screen reader all day.
  • Headings are set in a serif face (Cormorant Garamond), as are the wordmark and the lesson numbers. The DOE recommends sans serif for readability. Everything you actually read as running text is sans serif; the serif is my classroom's brand type and I use it for headings and display only. This is a recommendation rather than a WCAG requirement, and I am recording it rather than leaving it out.
  • The crest contains the words Arinze E Mbagwu. Text inside an image cannot be translated, so the crest carries a written description that screen readers and translators can use instead.
  • The 2025–26 archive keeps last year's lesson pages as they were taught, so parts of it do not meet everything above.

Accommodations

If you need something beyond what is built in, tell me and I will arrange it. That includes printed versions of any lesson, extended time on anything timed, a different way of showing me what you know, seating near the board, and spoken descriptions of anything visual.

Tell me about a barrier

If any part of this site is hard or impossible for you to use, tell me and I will fix it. Say which page and what happened – that is enough, you do not need to know the technical name for it.

You can also ask the school office, who can reach me and can arrange translation or interpretation for that conversation at no cost to you.
