Mixing: Levels

Thursday, February 25

As you walk inAl entrar

  1. Recorder from the bin, bag closed on the desk.
  2. Chromebook stays closed.La Chromebook, cerrada.
  3. Mix Sheet face up.La hoja de mezcla boca arriba.
Today: every layer audible, and the settings written down.
2
Do Now
Which Layer Can You Not Follow?
¿Qué capa no puedes seguir?

Same notes both times. Nothing added, nothing taken away. In the first one, name the layer you could not follow.

In Mix A I could not follow the ______. In Mix B I could follow ______.En la mezcla A no pude seguir ______. En la mezcla B sí pude seguir ______.
Mix A, then Mix B (93 seconds)Mezcla A, luego mezcla B (93 segundos)
Made for this class. Only one thing differs between them.

Today
I Can
Yo puedo

I canYo puedo

I can balance the levels of my track so every layer is audible, and document the settings on a mix sheet.

I know I have got it whenSé que lo logré cuando

  • I can follow every layer in my track, and so can my partner.
  • I wrote the level I set for each layer on my mix sheet.
  • I can say which layer I turned down, and why.Puedo decir qué capa bajé, y por qué.

A level you cannot write down is not a setting.

Warm-Up
The Row, Then Open Yours
La escala, luego abre el tuyo
  1. The row once: D E F# G A B C D and back.La escala una vez: D E F# G A B C D y de regreso.
  2. Recorders back in the bin. All of them.Las flautas al cubo. Todas.
  3. Lids up. Open your own track.Pantallas arriba. Abre tu pista.
  4. Play it through once, listening for one thing: a layer you cannot follow.Tócala una vez, escuchando una sola cosa: una capa que no puedas seguir.
The row, 76 BPMLa escala, 76 pulsos por minuto
Made for this class.

Speakers, not headphones. A buried layer hides in headphones.

5
I Do
One Fader Moved
Un control se movió
Mix A
Mix B
  • Same four layers. Three faders never moved. One did.Las mismas cuatro capas. Tres controles no se movieron. Uno sí.
  • Mixing changes nothing about what is played - every note is where it was.
6
I Do
Turn The Loud One Down
Baja la que está fuerte

Watch: I raise every fader. It is louder. Is anything easier to follow?Miren: subo todos los controles. Suena más fuerte. ¿Se sigue algo mejor?

Raising everything changed ______, because balance is between ______.

The ruleLa regla

To make room for a layer you cannot follow, turn a LOUD layer down.

Balance is judged between layers, not inside one. Turning everything up only spends headroom.

7
We Do
Balance The Demo Together
Equilibremos la demo juntos
  1. Which layer cannot you follow?¿Qué capa no puedes seguir?
  2. Which LOUD layer is covering it?¿Qué capa FUERTE la está tapando?
  3. How far down - a number, not about halfway.¿Cuánto hay que bajarla? Un número, no más o menos.
  4. Play it. Not enough? Try another number.Tócala. ¿No basta? Prueba otro número.
  5. Write the setting and the reason on the sheet.

Every number we try goes on the board, including the ones we reject. That is what a mix sheet is.

8
You Do
Balance Your Own Track
Equilibra tu pista
  1. Four layers. Four levels. A number on every line.Cuatro capas. Cuatro niveles. Un número en cada línea.
  2. A reason next to every number.Un motivo junto a cada número.
  3. If you cannot follow a layer, ask which layer is covering it.Si no puedes seguir una capa, pregunta qué capa la tapa.
  4. At 36:00 swap seats and tick the layers you can follow in the other track.

Checkpoint at 33:00Revisión a las 33:00

  • Four levels written, with reasonsCuatro niveles anotados, con motivos
  • A partner tick against all four layersUna marca de tu pareja en las cuatro capas
  • One layer you turned DOWNUna capa que BAJASTE

Ticks only today. No timestamps, no notes - that is next week.

9
Show Me
The Layer You Turned Down
La capa que bajaste

Four pairs: which layer went down, by how much, and what came out from under it.Cuatro parejas: qué capa bajó, cuánto, y qué salió de debajo.

We turned ______ down by ______, and now you can follow the ______.

One of you names today's learning for the room.

Then pack downLuego, a guardar

  1. Mix Sheet to the front.La hoja de mezcla al frente.
  2. Chromebook docked and plugged in.Chromebook en el carro y enchufado.
  3. I count them before anybody leaves.Los cuento antes de que nadie salga.
  4. Recorder bagged, bag in the bin.
10
Tomorrow
Next: Mixing: Space
Mañana: mezcla, espacio

Tomorrow: the other way to make room. Not louder or quieter - left and right.

Two layers fighting at the same level can both be heard if they are not in the same place. Bring your mix sheet back.
