Composer's Rationale

Tuesday, January 19

As you walk inAl entrar

  1. Leave the recorders in the bin.Deja las flautas en el cubo.
  2. Your Clean Score and Station Card are on your desk.
  3. One recording. Two stories about it.Una grabación. Dos versiones de la historia.
Today you do not play your piece. You account for it.
2
Do Now
Which One Is True?
¿Cuál es verdad?

Two composers describe the same recording. Only one of them is telling the truth. Which, and how can you tell?Dos personas describen la misma grabación. Solo una dice la verdad. ¿Cuál, y cómo lo sabes?

Claim AVersión A

"In bar 3 I put the highest note, so the piece grows into it.""En el compás 3 puse la nota más alta, para que la pieza crezca hacia ahí."

Claim BVersión B

"I made bar 1 the loudest, so it grabs you from the start.""Hice el compás 1 el más fuerte, para atraparte desde el principio."

The recording, twiceLa grabación, dos veces
Made for this class. This is the evidence.
Claim ______ is true, because I could hear ______.La versión ______ es verdad, porque pude oír ______.

You are not deciding which one you like. You are deciding which one the recording backs up.

Today
I Can
Yo puedo

I canYo puedo

I can explain three compositional choices in my own work by referring to specific bars of my score.

I know I have got it whenSé que lo logré cuando

  • I said which claim the recording supports, and how I could tell.
  • I named three choices in my own piece and the bar each one is in.Nombré tres decisiones en mi pieza y el compás de cada una.
  • I said what each choice was FOR, not only what it was.

Warm-Up
Your Loudest Bar
Tu compás más fuerte
  1. Breathe in for 4, out for 8.Inhala en 4, exhala en 8.
  2. The row with the recording, up and down.
  3. Play your own bar 1.Toca tu compás 1.
  4. Now play whichever bar of yours is loudest.
  5. Did those sound the same? Write that down.¿Sonaron igual? Anótalo.
The row, up and down, 76 BPMLa fila, subiendo y bajando, 76
Made for this class.

This is the only playing today. If your piece has no loudest bar, that is a finding, and it is the first thing to write on your card.

I Do
Claim, Bar, Purpose
Afirmación, compás, propósito

DecemberDiciembre

In bar ___ I noticed ___.En el compás ___ noté ___.

Last weekLa semana pasada

In bar ___ I could not ___.En el compás ___ no pude ___.

TodayHoy

In bar ___ I ___ so that ___.En el compás ___ yo ___ para que ___.

The piece from the Do Now. Bar 3 is where the tune goes highest.

"I wanted it to sound good" is not a rationale, because nobody can check it. A rationale names a bar, so somebody can go and look.

6
We Do
Check the Claim
Comprueba la afirmación
  1. We play one composer's recording.Escuchamos la grabación de una persona.
  2. They give ONE rationale: bar, what they did, what it was for.
  3. Your job is not to agree.Tu tarea no es estar de acuerdo.
  4. Your job is to say whether you can hear it.Tu tarea es decir si puedes oírlo.
  5. If nobody can, the composer chooses what to change.Si nadie puede, quien compuso elige qué cambiar.

Two honest answersDos respuestas honestas

Change the claim, or change the piece. Both are legitimate. Pretending the room heard it is not.Cambia la afirmación, o cambia la pieza. Las dos valen. Fingir que el salón lo oyó, no.

I could ______ hear it, because ______.______ pude oírlo, porque ______.
7
You Do
Three Choices, Three Bars
Tres decisiones, tres compases
  1. Three choices from your own piece.Tres decisiones de tu propia pieza.
  2. Each one names a DIFFERENT bar.Cada una nombra un compás DISTINTO.
  3. Each one says what it was for.Cada una dice para qué fue.
  4. At 34:00, swap cards with a partner.A las 34:00, intercambia tarjetas con tu pareja.
  5. They read one and go looking for it in your score.

If all three are bar 3Si las tres son el compás 3

Then two of them are the same choice described twice. Go and look at bars 5 to 8.Entonces dos son la misma decisión contada dos veces. Mira los compases 5 a 8.

In bar ______ I ______ so that ______.En el compás ______ yo ______ para que ______.

Tomorrow is the assessment. Four bars, written in this room.Mañana es la evaluación. Cuatro compases, escritos en este salón.
