I Can
Yo puedo

I canYo puedo

I can write a clean final score of my piece and have somebody who has never seen it play it from the page.

I know I have got it whenSé que lo logré cuando

  • I found the one note that changed between the two readings, and said why it changed.
  • I wrote a clean score carrying every mark a reader needs.
  • Somebody who had never seen my piece played it from the page while I said nothing.

  1. Breathe in for 4, out for 8.Inhala en 4, exhala en 8.
  2. The row with the recording, up and down.

I Do
What a Reader Cannot Guess
Lo que quien lee no puede adivinar
With the key signature.
Without it. Also correct notation.

  • The clef.La clave.
  • The key signature, on every stave.La armadura, en cada pentagrama.
  • The time signature.El compás.
  • Where each bar ends.Dónde termina cada compás.
  • Which line is the tune and which is the second part.
  • Whose piece it is.De quién es la pieza.

Neither page is wrong. They are different pieces, and the only difference is one mark at the front.

We Do
Find the Missing Mark
Encuentra la marca que falta
A page handed to a reader. What is missing?
  1. Name the mark that is missing.Nombra la marca que falta.
  2. Say what a reader would play because it is missing.Di qué tocaría quien lee por esa falta.
  3. Two readers play it as written.
  4. Then again with the mark restored.Luego otra vez con la marca puesta.

Naming the missing mark is the easy half. Saying what the reader would actually DO is the half that sends you back to your own page.

7
You Do
The Clean Copy
La copia limpia
  1. Write it fresh. Do not correct the old page.Escríbela de nuevo. No corrijas la página vieja.

  4. Hand it to a reader who has never played it.Dásela a alguien que nunca la haya tocado.
  5. Say nothing at all while they read.No digas nada mientras lee.

The reader is the testQuien lee es la prueba

If they play something you did not intend, a mark is missing. They are not the culprit.

My reader played ______ where I meant ______.Quien leyó tocó ______ donde yo quería ______.
