  1. Take your recorder from the bin.Toma tu flauta del cubo.
  2. Your page is on your desk.Tu página está en tu pupitre.
  3. The same melody twice. Listen underneath it.La misma melodía dos veces. Escucha por debajo.
Your melody has been alone since we started. Today it is not.

Do Now
What Got Added?
¿Qué se añadió?

The same melody, twice. Not one note of the tune is different. The second time, somebody plays underneath it. What changed?La misma melodía, dos veces. Ni una nota de la tonada cambia. La segunda vez, alguien toca por debajo. ¿Qué cambió?

The second time the piece sounded ______, and the melody was still ______.La segunda vez la pieza sonó ______, y la melodía seguía ______.
Alone, then with a second partSola, luego con segunda voz
Made for this class. The tune is identical in both.

Nothing was added to the melody. Everything that changed happened underneath it.

I Can
Yo puedo

I canYo puedo

I can add a second part under my melody by testing G and D under each bar and choosing the one that fits.

I know I have got it whenSé que lo logré cuando

  • I said what the second part added, and what stayed the same.
  • I tested both notes under the same bar and said which one clashed.
  • I chose a note for each of my first four bars and played them with a partner.

Warm-Up
Two Notes, Held
Dos notas, sostenidas
  1. Breathe in for 4, out for 8.Inhala en 4, exhala en 8.
  2. The row with the recording, up and down.
  3. Low D, four beats. Still there on beat four.Re grave, cuatro tiempos. Que siga ahí en el cuarto.
  4. G, four beats. The same.Sol, cuatro tiempos. Igual.
  5. Again, softer. The tune has to stay on top.Otra vez, más suave. La tonada va encima.
The row, up and down, 76 BPMLa fila, subiendo y bajando, 76
Made for this class.

Low D is the hardest note on this instrument to hold. Less air, not more, and cover the hole completely.

I Do
Underneath
Por debajo
The tune on top. The second part underneath, two beats a note, so you can breathe.

The tuneLa tonada

Moves. Exactly what you heard the first time. Nothing was added to it.Se mueve. Exactamente lo que oíste la primera vez. No se le añadió nada.

The second partLa segunda voz

Holds. Two beats a note, softer, and it does NOT stay on one note. Look at bar 3.Sostiene.

The bottom line moves up exactly where the tune climbs highest. That is not a coincidence, and the next slide is how you find it.

We Do
Test It
Pruébalo
The same bar: held D, then held GEl mismo compás: con Re, luego con Sol
Made for this class. Only the note underneath is different.
  1. The same bar both times.El mismo compás las dos veces.
  2. The only difference is the note underneath.
  3. Thumbs up for the first. Two fingers for the second.Pulgar arriba por la primera. Dos dedos por la segunda.
  4. Vote before anybody explains.Voten antes de que alguien explique.
Your two choices. Nothing else today.

One of them rubs against a note in that bar. A clash is not illegal, but you have to choose it on purpose.

7
You Do
Two Parts, One Piece
Dos voces, una pieza
  1. One of you plays bar 1. The other holds D.Uno toca el compás 1. El otro sostiene Re.
  2. The same bar again, with G underneath.
  3. Choose. Write it on the card.Elige. Anótalo en la tarjeta.
  4. Bars 2, 3 and 4 the same way.Compases 2, 3 y 4 igual.
  5. Play all four bars together, both parts.
  6. Swap. Now do theirs.Cambien. Ahora la pieza del otro.

If both sound fineSi las dos suenan bien

Say so on the card, then pick the one you want. That is a real answer, as long as you played both.

Under bar ______ I chose ______, because the other one ______.Bajo el compás ______ elegí ______, porque la otra ______.

Next: Catch-Up and Extension
Mañana: ponerse al día

Tomorrow is yours. Whatever part of this week beat you is what you work on.Mañana es tuyo.

A bar that will not count. A revision you never finished. A second part that is still empty. Bring the one you name yourself.Un compás que no cuadra. Una revisión sin terminar. Una segunda voz todavía vacía. Trae la que tú mismo nombres.
