Monday, December 7

As you walk inAl entrar

  1. Take your recorder from the bin.Toma tu flauta del cubo.
  2. Sit. Recorder on the desk, hands off.Siéntate. La flauta en el pupitre, manos quietas.
  3. Two lines today. Listen for which one jumps.Hoy son dos líneas. Escucha cuál salta.
Next door is a step. Over one is a leap.
2
Do Now
Which One Jumps?
¿Cuál salta?

Two lines. Same rhythm, same speed, both start on G and both end on G. One walks. One jumps.

Line ______ jumps. It made the music sound ______.La línea ______ salta. Hizo que la música sonara ______.
Line A, then line BLínea A, luego línea B
Made for this class. Only the distance between notes changes.

Nothing else is different. Not the speed, not the rhythm, not the last note.

Today
I Can
Yo puedo

I canYo puedo

I can tell steps from leaps in three melodies by marking each move and rewriting my own shape with one leap.

I know I have got it whenSé que lo logré cuando

  • I marked every move in three lines as a step or a leap.
  • I said what the leap did to my ear that the step version did not.
  • I rewrote my own shape with one leap in it and played both versions.

Warm-Up
The Row, Then the Skips
La fila, luego los saltos
  1. Breathe in for 4, out for 8.Inhala en 4, exhala en 8.
  2. The row by step, with the recording, up and down.
  3. Now the skips, slowly: G to B, A to C, B to D.Ahora los saltos, despacio: G a B, A a C, B a D.
  4. Back down: D to B, C to A, B to G.De regreso: D a B, C a A, B a G.
The row, up and down, 76 BPMLa fila, subiendo y bajando, 76
Made for this class.

The skips are harder: two fingers move at once. A leap costs the player something too.

5
I Do
Next Door, or Over One
Al lado, o saltando una
The same rhythm twice. Above, every move is next door. Below, every move jumps over one.
  • Step: the next note in the row. On the page, line to space.
  • Leap: over one or more. On the page, it skips a line or a space.
  • Most melodies walk most of the time.
  • The leap is saved for the moment that should land.
6
We Do
Mark the Moves
Marca los movimientos
  1. Five notes per line. Four moves between them.Cinco notas por línea. Cuatro movimientos entre ellas.
  2. One letter per move: S for step, L for leap.
  3. Each line plays twice.Cada línea suena dos veces.
  4. Write your guess even when you are not sure.Escribe tu respuesta aunque no estés seguro.
Three lines, two seconds apartTres líneas, dos segundos entre cada una
Made for this class. Ask me and I will play them again.

Direction is not size. Down can be a step; down can be a leap.

7
Check
Now We Check
Ahora revisamos
Line 1, line 2, line 3. Mark each move between two notes.

Correct your own sheet in a second colour. A wrong mark you fix is worth more than a blank box.

8
You Do
One Leap
Un salto
  1. Get Friday's shape back out.Saca tu forma del viernes.
  2. Change exactly ONE move into a leap. Not four. No cuatro. Uno.
  3. Write the new version under the old one.
  4. Play both for your partner: before, then after.
  5. Say what the leap bought, and what it cost.Di qué ganó el salto y qué costó.

The tradeEl intercambio

A leap makes a melody bigger and harder to play at the same time. Keeping both versions is how you find out whether it was worth it.Un salto hace la melodía más grande y más difícil a la vez.

The leap made it ______, but it cost me ______.El salto lo hizo ______, pero me costó ______.
