2
Do Now
What Moved?
¿Qué se movió?

The same notes, in the same order, at the same speed. Both versions last exactly as long. One thing moved. Which version made sense?

Version ______ made sense. What moved was the ______.La versión ______ tuvo sentido. Lo que se movió fue la ______.

I Can
Yo puedo

I canYo puedo

I can find where a phrase ends in three melodies by marking the breath and writing my own four-bar phrase that lands.

I know I have got it whenSé que lo logré cuando

  • I marked where the breath came in all three lines.
  • I said why the wrong breath made the first version harder to follow.
  • I wrote a four-bar phrase that ends on a note that sounds finished.

Warm-Up
Breathe in Fours
Respira de cuatro en cuatro
  1. Breathe in for 4, out for 8.Inhala en 4, exhala en 8.
  2. Play four notes of the row, then breathe.
  3. Four more, then breathe. All the way up and back.Cuatro más y respira. Hasta arriba y de regreso.
  4. Once more with no recording. Watch me for the breath.Otra vez sin grabación. Mírame para la respiración.
The row, breathing every four notesLa fila, respirando cada cuatro notas
Made for this class.

The breath is part of the music. Players plan it; they do not wait until they have to take it.

5
I Do
One Breath at a Time
Una respiración a la vez
The same notes twice. Above, the breath splits the line. Below, it joins two groups of four.
  • A phrase is a stretch of melody that sounds like one breath.
  • It ends on a landing note.Termina en una nota de llegada.
  • Four bars is the usual length.Cuatro compases es la longitud habitual.
  • Two of them make the eight bars you are writing by January.

Every word in that sentence was right. The pause was wrong, and you stopped understanding me. Music does the same thing.

We Do
Where Is the Breath?
¿Dónde está la respiración?
  1. Eight notes per line. One breath somewhere inside.Ocho notas por línea. Una respiración en algún punto.
  2. Count the notes as they go by.Cuenta las notas mientras pasan.

  4. Each line plays twice.Cada línea suena dos veces.
Three lines, two seconds apartTres líneas, dos segundos entre cada una
Made for this class. Ask me and I will play them again.

Count only what sounds. The breath is the space between notes, not one of them.

7
Check
Now We Check
Ahora revisamos
Line 1 breathes after four. Line 2 after five. Line 3 after three.

Correct your own sheet in a second colour. Hearing an early breath is harder than hearing one in the middle.

8
You Do
Your Four Bars
Tus cuatro compases
  1. Get out the shape you have been carrying since Friday.
  2. Give it four bars. The shape is the start, not the whole thing.Dale cuatro compases. La forma es el comienzo, no todo.

  4. Play it for your partner.Tócala para tu pareja.
  5. Ask one question: did it sound finished, or did it sound like I stopped?

Finished, or stopped?¿Terminada o detenida?

There is a difference between a phrase that lands and a phrase that runs out. Your partner can hear it even when they cannot name it.Hay diferencia entre una frase que aterriza y una que se queda sin aire. Tu pareja lo oye aunque no sepa nombrarlo.

My four bars land on ______. My partner said it sounded ______.Mis cuatro compases aterrizan en ______. Mi pareja dijo que sonó ______.
