Welcome Back – Turn Your Break Into a Lyric

Bienvenidos – Convierte Tu Descanso en una Letra
05:00

Part 1: Your Moment (2 min)

Parte 1: Tu Momento

Think about ONE moment from Spring Break that made you feel something strong – joy, frustration, peace, anger, surprise.

Write 2–3 sentences describing that moment using IMAGERY – paint the picture so we can SEE it.

Escribe 2–3 oraciones describiendo ese momento usando IMAGINERÍA.

Part 2: Connect It (2 min)

Parte 2: Conéctalo

Now answer:

  • If you turned that moment into a protest song, what social issue would it connect to?
  • Which technique would you use – imagery, repetition, or contrast?
¿Si lo convirtieras en una canción de protesta, ¿a qué tema social se conectaría?
DOK 2 – APPLY

Share with your neighbor: What moment did you pick? What technique would fit it best? Be ready – I’m calling on 3 people.

Comparte con tu vecino. Estar preparado – voy a llamar a 3 personas.

I Can…

Yo Puedo…

Analyze how lyrics and production work together to convey a social message AND write my own social commentary lyrics using at least 2 techniques.

Analizar cómo las letras y la producción trabajan juntas para transmitir un mensaje social Y escribir mis propias letras de comentario social usando al menos 2 técnicas.

3 Lyric Power Techniques

3 Técnicas Poderosas de Letras

1. Imagery

Imaginería

Paint a picture with words so the listener sees what you mean.

“Southern trees bear a strange fruit / Blood on the leaves”

— Billie Holiday

2. Repetition

Repetición

Repeat a key phrase to make it stick — this becomes your hook or chant.

“We gon’ be alright / We gon’ be alright”

— Kendrick Lamar

3. Contrast

Contraste

Put opposites next to each other to create tension and make the message hit harder.

“Sins that go against our skin become blessings”

— Common & John Legend, “Glory”

Production Match

Concordancia de Producción

The beat and sound should match the feeling of your words. Sad = minor key. Hopeful = major key, rising melody.

DOK 1 – RECALL

Quick check: Name all 3 techniques. What does each one DO?

Break Down “Glory”

Analicemos “Glory” Juntos

One day when the glory comes Repetition

It will be ours, it will be ours

Oh, one day when the war is won

We will be sure, we will be sure

Hands to the Heavens, no man, no weapon

Formed against, yes, glory is destined Imagery

Every day women and men become legends

Sins that go against our skin become blessings Contrast

DOK 2

Point to a line that uses imagery. What do you see when you hear it?

DOK 2

What phrase repeats? WHY did Common choose to repeat it instead of saying something new?

DOK 3

How does the production (piano → choir) SUPPORT the contrast between “sins” and “blessings”?

Before You Write – Think

Antes de Escribir – Piensa
DOK 3 – ANALYZE

WHY is “the corner store is gone” more powerful than “my neighborhood is bad”? What makes specific imagery hit harder than general statements?

¿Por qué es más poderoso ser específico que general?
DOK 3 – JUSTIFY

If you removed ALL repetition from “Alright” by Kendrick – what would the song lose? Could it still become a protest chant? Why or why not?

¿Qué perdería la canción sin la repetición?
DOK 3 – EVALUATE

Which technique do you think is MOST effective for social commentary – imagery, repetition, or contrast? Defend your answer with a reason.

¿Cuál técnica es la MÁS efectiva? Defiende tu respuesta.
DOK 4 – CREATE

Your task today: Write lyrics that make someone who has NEVER experienced your issue feel what it’s like. That’s the power of social commentary.

Tu tarea: escribir letras que hagan a alguien sentir lo que es vivir tu tema.
