Friday, December 18

As you walk inAl entrar

  1. Take your recorder from the bin.Toma tu flauta del cubo.
  2. Sit. Recorder on the desk, hands off.Siéntate. La flauta en el pupitre, manos quietas.
  3. Two versions. Same high note. Listen for WHEN it arrives.Dos versiones. La misma nota alta. Escucha CUÁNDO llega.
One of these is the highest note you wrote. Where did you put it?
2
Do Now
Early, or Late?
¿Temprano o tarde?

Both reach the SAME high note. Both are the same length. Both finish on G. One peaks early, one peaks late. Which is which, and what did peaking early cost?

Version ______ peaks early. It cost the music ______.La versión ______ llega temprano a su punto alto. Le costó a la música ______.
Version A, then version BVersión A, luego versión B
Made for this class. Neither one is louder than the other.

A recorder cannot shout. Nothing here gets louder - only the timing of the high note moves.

I Can
Yo puedo

I canYo puedo

I can find the highest note in my own four bars and decide whether it is in the right place by comparing two versions.

I know I have got it whenSé que lo logré cuando

  • I said which version peaked early and what that cost it.Dije cuál versión llegó temprano a su punto alto y qué le costó.
  • I found the highest note in my own four bars and named its bar.
  • I said whether it is in the right place, and moved it if it was not.

Warm-Up
Climb and Come Back
Sube y regresa
  1. Breathe in for 4, out for 8.Inhala en 4, exhala en 8.
  2. The row with the recording, up and down.
  3. Now: G, A, B, C, D. Stop on the D.Ahora: G, A, B, C, D. Detente en el D.
  4. Come back down slowly: D, C, B, A, G.Baja despacio: D, C, B, A, G.
  5. Twice. Notice the moment you reach the top.
The row, up and down, 76 BPMLa fila, subiendo y bajando, 76
Made for this class.

The climb is easy. Coming down under control is not - and the notes after a peak matter as much as the peak.

I Do
Placement, Not Volume
Colocación, no volumen
The same high D in both. Above it arrives in bar 1; below it waits until bar 3.
  • The climax is the highest note of the phrase.
  • It is a place, not a volume - a recorder cannot shout.
  • Most melodies save it for near the end.
  • Once you have been to the top, there is nowhere further to go.Una vez que llegaste arriba, ya no hay a dónde subir.

We Do
Where Is the Peak?
¿Dónde está el punto alto?
Find the highest note. Which bar is it in? Should it stay there?
  1. Find the highest note.Encuentra la nota más alta.
  2. Name its bar.Di en qué compás está.
  3. Should it stay, or move?¿Se queda o se mueve?
  4. We try it both ways and vote with our ears.

Bar 2 is neither clearly early nor clearly late, so the room will split. That is the right outcome - I do not settle it, the playing does.

7
You Do
Find Your Peak
Encuentra tu punto alto
  1. Circle the highest note in your four bars.

  4. If yes, say why. If no, move it and play both.Si sí, di por qué. Si no, muévela y toca las dos.
  5. Count the bar again if you moved anything.Vuelve a contar el compás si moviste algo.

An accident becomes a decisionUn accidente se vuelve decisión

Most of you put your highest note somewhere without planning it. Today it stops being an accident, whether you move it or not.

My highest note is ______, in bar ______. I am ______ it because ______.Mi nota más alta es ______, en el compás ______. La voy a ______ porque ______.

Monday
Next: Catch-Up and Extension
El lunes: ponerse al día y extender

Four bars, counted, readable, with the high note where YOU decided to put it.Cuatro compases, contados, legibles, con la nota alta donde TÚ decidiste ponerla.

Monday is a catch-up day. If your four bars are all three of those, you move ahead; if not, we fix them together.
